What Does Mediation Cost?
Most mediated divorces cost between $2,000 and $6,000. I charge an hourly rate for my time,
both in and out of mediation sessions. The length of time you have been married,
whether you and your spouse have accumulated a lot of property, whether or not you have
children, where you are emotionally, in the separation process, and how much work you and
your spouse are interested in doing yourselves, will all factor into how many mediation
sessions it will take to resolve your separation and divorce.
I have found that couples who are getting along very well during their divorce - those who
have been separated for some time, and have already devoted time and energy working through
the understandable hurt and anger - or those who are very unified in wanting to protect their
children as much as possible from the stress of the separation - are able to resolve all of
their outstanding issues in fewer than 4 sessions. Mediation sessions usually last 1 ½-2 hours.
After you have made all of the decisions necessary, I will draft a Separation Agreement for
you. Some couples who come to me for mediation want to avoid attorneys. But many couples with
whom I work take the Agreement to separate attorneys for a 1-2 hour consultation.
The Attorney will read the Agreement and make sure you are informed of your legal rights,
and fully understand what you have agreed to, before you sign the Agreement. The Attorney
fee for this kind of consultation will average around $500.
After the Agreement is signed, if appropriate, I can prepare and file the divorce papers
for you in the courts. For that service, I charge a flat fee, presently $800, in addition
to the court fees which are as follows:
Purchase Index Number - $210.
File Stipulation of Settlement - $35.
Placement on Uncontested Divorce Calendar - $125.
Purchase 2 certified copies of Divorce Judgment - $24.
Total: $394.
